Short Story Review - The Bone Cage

Short Story - The Bone Cage
Writer - Phil Kelly
Series - Warhammer : The End Times
Published By - Black Library

The End Times are coming to the Warhammer Universe. And it seems to be a very promising time for reading the warhammer fictions in years. So I decided to start my reading of this event with this little short story which promises to be a kind of a prequel to the first novel. The story provided almost just what I presumed it would while not really adding anything to the setting actually but providing some introduction for some of the major characters.

It tells the tale of a group of holy men and women of many faiths who are being transported through the wilds of Sylvania in a sinister cage of living bone. At the head of their procession of the dead is Mannfred von Carstein, lord of that benighted realm. It tells their tale of trying to cope with their captivity as well as of their attempt despite everything to free themselves while guessing at their captors motivations.

The story while short introduces us with the many characters who are going to play roles in the future of the warhammer universe and creates a sense of doom through their eyes for the whole future of the setting. The diverse range of characters were interesting and the battle scenes were fun; but like most other short stories these days from black library these story kept promising of future event while not really adding that much to the overall.

Hopefully the future novels on this setting will be much more revealing and meaningful than this small piece of work which actually only tries to build up the mood for future grimness.

This gets 3 out of 5 stars from me.
