Writer - Kevin Berry
Series - Stim #4
So what if you are a person who is quite depended on your medication and suddenly some unforeseen disaster throws everything around you in chaos and makes you unable to take your medication? How do you cope with the aftereffects of such an episode? And how does it feel to be different from others and cope with it? 'Kaleidoscope' is the story of a girl facing these problems told quite nicely in her own perspective mixed with humor and emotional bits.
Writing a book in first person perspective is always a hard task but the author does it so effortlessly and the story flows in a unique and fun way with the suddenly hectic days of Chloe. As someone suffering from 'Asperger's Syndrome' and Bipolar disorder it is quite hard for Chloe to deal with changes, so imagine her level of discomfort when the earthquake strikes? The author tells with his excellent prose the story of these days in Chloe's life.
The other fun bits were Chloe's dilemma in understanding non-spectrum (normal) people and her unique use of neologisms to make light of situations. I also liked the fact that the author took a real life disaster like the setting of 2011 Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand as the location, which adds that much more realism to the story.
My only gripe is the fact that although telling the story from one person's point-of-view was its strong point it also makes me sometimes wonder what was going on through the minds of others. The whole thing gets a bit repetitive at times as I kept wondering about this.
This gets 3.5 out of 5 stars.
About The Book -
The sequel to STIM…an Aspie new adult contemporary novel set in an earthquake zone.
Chloe is different. She has Asperger’s Syndrome, Bipolar Disorder and probably a few other inconvenient conditions as well. She’s a quirky, resourceful and clever psychology student, but her world is literally about to be shaken apart. A devastating earthquake sparks a chain of events that spiral her life out of control. She’s off her meds. Her oddly-named cat is missing. She doesn’t know what she wants out of life any more. Misfortune and uncertainty don’t mix well with bundles of energy and Chloe’s tendency to ignore consequences. It’s as if mayhem and trouble are her constant companions.
Will Chloe be able to cope with the earth-shaking events that rock her world?
