Just when I thought that Hickman is finally slowing down with his new epic, he throws such a powerful gut wrenching tale at full speed for me. This issue is yet another example of the terrific prowess of this creative team in delivering immensely captivating stories with unbelievable characters that will make you feel such real emotions.

On the surface, this latest issue of the 'House of X/ Power of X' event appears simple, just the authors continuing to the present time for a change, depicting just another mission for our heroes. But then it all turns haywire, our beloved heroes get killed left and right, and the future that had seemed so hopeful in the beginning turns bleaker than apocalypse.

Hickman has always been known for his storytelling and grandiose scope, but here he proves he can write his characters damn well too. In a few simple dialogues and actions he makes these classic characters feel so real and palpable. This truly is a love letter to any fan of the X-men, especially for those who have stayed with these characters through their greatest triumphs and defeats. And after some lackluster storylines for a while now this brilliant capture of all the strengths of this setting does feel like justice.

The dialogue deserves all the praise it can get, in my opinion. The reader gets nostalgic with the dogged determination of Cyclops, the no-nonsense bravery of Wolverine and even the charismatic faith of Nightcrawler. That conversation between Kurt and Logan is just something for the ages. And the bit about humanities - of getting used to cruelty just hits so close to the truth.

The drawing and coloring duo also continues to be as tight and magnificent as ever. The action sequences are fluid, the facial expressions speak more than any words in conveying the emotions and the desperate plight of these mutants.

Although it is certain that these characters will not be staying dead for too long, this series still remains as unpredictable and enjoyable as ever. It is becoming harder and harder to wait a week for the each installment of this fantastic tale.

10 out of 10, again.
