Well, that was something epic. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from the new X-men event as the X-men titles have been really lackluster for some years now. But the name of 'Jonathan Hickman' gave me some hope and being a fan of these characters since childhood, I decided to give it a try, I loved the first issues of the two new series', was quite hopeful for the overall event. The, 'House of X #2' came out and made me realize I just might have read the best single issue (unarguably the most impact-full) of this year.
This issue deals with one single character, and she has never been actually a member of X-man till now and up until now we never even thought she was a mutant. but, 'Hickman' just throws everything out the window and we get introduced to Moira MacTaggert's hidden mutant power.
The story is told with such finesse and skill that the reader never has any idea what to expect when he turns the next page. We get acquainted with Moira's power of reincarnation with her memories intact and her attempts at using this power to help her people. And all the while the story is full of the rich history of the X-men and some unexpected yet appreciated cameos.
The art by Pepe Larraz is a force on its own, as he skillfully and lovingly detail 'Hickman's ambitious concept with his emotionally expressive character arts and grandiose and detailed action bits of the possibilities on offer. Marte Gracia also does a commendable job of keeping up with the scope on offer and eases the transition between the two parts of the bigger story with his coloring.
All in all, Hickman's status quo changing storytelling is really something to behold and each and every fan of X-men from any of their different iterations should regard these two series as must read, especially after this issue. I, myself, simply can't wait for the future issues.
This is perfection, 10 out of 10 stars.
