Android Game Review - The King of Fighters All Star

Game Name - The King of Fighters All Star
Publisher - SNK
Developer - Netmarble Games
Platform - Android, iOS
Genre - Beat 'em up, role-playing game

It has only been more than a month that Kof All Star was released globally and it is way better than I expected. The beat-em-up action rpg experience with character acquiring elements never give you a dull moment. And for any veteran King of fighters fan it is a treasure trove of nostalgia with replaying the story bits and the vast cast of characters, while new events and crossovers with other franchises keep casual players entertained.

The gameplay uses beat-em-up mechanics with the characters using their unique special moves and supers to overcome hordes of enemies and unique bosses to progress in the story. There is also PVP, both real-time or computer generated battles with other players for ranking up. And also power up dungeons and multiple event quests in which players can get items to level up or even new characters to play with.

The Game has a huge cast of characters from kof history

The rpg element follows the standard method of leveling up characters, cores to add perks to specials moves and new abilities, battle cards to equip (which can be also leveled up) and affinity adding more benefits when you gift your characters unique items. there are daily missions as well as events specific missions to keep the player occupied even after completing the story. The characters are arrayed into 5 colored element groups with each having specific weaknesses and strengths.

The story in itself is very fun, as it guides the player with his unique character through the storyline of the past King of fighters games. I got really nostalgic experiencing the stories that I vastly enjoyed and replayed multiple times in my childhood. And the games even offers hard and expert levels for each story mode after completion on normal level.

Kula using her Super move (see the gorgeous graphics!)

The graphics are quite terrific with smooth animation for the moves and really good looking character portraits.  Co-Op play, is another great concept where you can Ally yourself with other players and take on enemies, work together to create strategies to win games. There are guilds you can join, adding more benefits to reap from.

The main currency in the game is gems, which you can you get plentiful from story mode, various missions and events. There is no real need to spend any money if you don't want all the characters and stuff. Everything is 'free to play' friendly, which is a must have concept for android games, in my opinion.

The latest event is a collaboration with Tekken

The only negatives I can find are the fact that there are no story modes available after the king of fighters '98 series so far (come on Netmarble/SNK, I would love to play the Nests saga and Ash saga once more on my android) and the real time battles lag if your connection is not very powerful.

Overall, this game is a brilliant transition of a beloved fighting game classic into mobile gaming. I just with other fighting game companies would try something like this and blend their works into handheld rpgs as well.

My score - 9.5 out of 10.
