Well, it is quite a daunting task to write a character that has been done only by its creator ever before. So, like everyone else, I was being quite skeptic about the new 'Miles Morales: Spider-man' series. But then I saw the name of the new writer, and my huge admiration for 'Saladin Ahmed' drew me in for this first issue. And thankfully, this creative team didn't disappoint at all.

Saladin had a job set up for him while writing this first issue of the new ongoing. And he does it quite commendably. Not only does he introduce both new and old readers to the world of Miles, he sets his own pace with the character and adds some new story elements focus on the real world issue of deportation and immigrants. Mix this with any teenager's unique sense of being overwhelmed by the reality of the world, which makes our hero that much more realistic.

Despite the lack of space for action due to the setting up required of such an issue we see only minimal action, but what is shown really shines through specially due to stunning work done by 'Javier Garron' and 'David Curiel. Miles has his signature attitude and outlook to see his surroundings, and his confusion in juggling his two lives while trying to be a good kid for his parents is rather charmingly handled by the author, as well.

And yet, I must again return to the art. 'Javi Garron' did a remarkable job here, giving each character unique facial expressions and his detailed background made me come back more than once to some pages to see if I missed anything. 'David Curiel' on the other hand gives the story a whole new dimension with his intelligent coloring, which at times seems almost like background music or even a soundtrack for this great issue. 'Cory Petit', as always, is marvelous with his word bubble placement and overall lettering.

But in the end, this issue does lack of new content for returning fans. The info dump might be a bit boring for some, especially regarding not much really happens for setting up a new storyline. But then again, the ending does promise quite a lot for the future.

I will give this one 4 out of 5 stars.
