Manga Review - Fire Force Vol. 2

Manga Name : Fire Force (Volume Two)
Author: Atsushi Ohkubo (Story & Art)
Original Serialization: Shounen Magazine (Weekly)
English Publisher : Kodansha Comics
Genres: Action, Sci-Fi, Shounen

There is no doubt that the 2nd volume of 'Fire Force' is an improvement over the 1st one. The plot gets new & interesting sequences, some new characters with their own agendas are introduced, the action gets more imaginative and engaging and the overall drawing seems to have improved too.

But, the issues that plagued the 1st volume still remains, and seems to be festering. Most of the main cast stays as bluntly unoriginal as before, the unnecessary fan service seems to have gone up a notch and everything positive threatens to fall into generic mediocrity at any moment.

The story follows from the first volume, as we get introduced to the mysterious man named Joker and his mysterious motives, then quickly we are introduced to our first sentient infernal and the shady 5th company with their own agenda.

Among the characters the only ones who seems to have gained some interesting aspects are the two military members of company 8. Others just seem to have gotten more two dimensional, although there is a bit of hope for some in the future.

The action sequences have become much more detailed, although there is still vast room for improvement. Shinra is becoming more and more capable of stealing the show in terms of battle prowess. The drawing also seems much more detailed and manages to indicate the excitement during fight scenes.

But, then the needless fan service comes out of nowhere and spoils the whole mood. This kind of thing might be fun for some people, but for someone like me it just manages to hold off the overall experience significantly.

Overall Score -
                           6.5 out of 10.
